Wins vault drivers into Countdown lead

Top Fuel driver Shawn Langdon and Funny Car’s John Force both extended their points leads and edged closer to world championship titles by racing to victories on Sunday at the Auto-Plus NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway.

Jeg Coughlin Jr. (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners at the fourth of six playoff races in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship. More >

Line jumps in Pro Stock

John Force qualified in the No. 1 position and became the new Funny Car points leader on Saturday at the 29th annual Auto-Plus NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway.

Morgan Lucas (Top Fuel), Jason Line (Pro Stock), and Michael Ray (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also will lead their categories into Sunday’s 11 a.m. eliminations as No. 1 qualifiers at the 22nd race of the season and the fourth of six playoff races in the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship. John Force powered to the first three-second run of his standout career and raced to the qualifying lead in Funny Car Friday at the 29th annual Auto-Plus NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway.

Morgan Lucas (Top Fuel), Allen Johnson (Pro Stock), and Michael Ray (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were qualifying leaders in their categories at the fourth of six events in the NHRA Mello Yello Series Countdown to the Championship playoffs.

Force wins at St. Louis

John Force raced to his 136th career victory and moved into position to earn a 16th Funny Car world championship title Sunday at the AAA Insurance NHRA Midwest Nationals at Gateway Motorsports Park near St. Louis.

Antron Brown (Top Fuel), Erica Enders-Stevens (Pro Stock), and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also were winners at the 21st race of the season and third of six playoff events in the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship.

Force powered to his second win of the season with a final-round performance of 4.097 seconds at 310.13 mph in his Castrol GTX Ford Mustang while defending world champ Jack Beckman trailed in his Valvoline/MTS Dodge Charger with a 4.127 at 309.84. More >
