Kershner, Mellinger win index races
The debut of the Boninfante Friction B1 Index Series brought out two local winners Sunday at Maple Grove Raceway.
Jennifer Kershner (New Tripoli, Pa.) and Ron Mellinger (Narvon, Pa.) both won their respective classes as the new series was run in conjunction with Maple Grove’s E.T. bracket series, the Sunoco Race Fuels Money Trail.
Both racers took home $450 for first place. The runners-up each received $150 and the semifinalists all got $100.
In the B1 Index Series, cars competed in a head’s up format. There were no handicaps and both cars left the starting line at the same time. There will be two more index races this season on June 29 and July 7.
Kershner and her 1972 Nova won the 11.50 class, as runner-up Keith Reis (Furlong, Pa.) had a broke car. Both of them earned the right to be part of a special 8-car showcase eliminator at the Toyota NHRA Summernationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in New Jersey, May 30 – June 1.
In the quarterfinals, Kershner used a pass of 11.536 seconds at 116.92 mph to defeat Cliff Sebring (Conowingo, Md.), who ran 11.513 at 114.59. She then had a bye in the semis.
Meanwhile, Reis and his ’71 Chevelle used a superior reaction time to beat Jay Hellman (Norristown, Pa.) in the quarters. That was key because his pass of 11.496 at 116.39 was a half-second slower. He then took down Steve Gurvick (Wilmington, Del.) in the semis as he went 11.500 on the dot to win the race.
In the 10.00 class, Mellinger and his ’74 Nova also took advantage of a quicker trigger finger to beat Carl Ungaro (Langhorn, Pa.) in the final. His run of 10.015 at 127.51 was a tad slower and the reaction time of .016 was a big help.
Mellinger beat Brian Grinnell (Royersford, Pa.) in the quarterfinals with a pass of 10.055 at 129.72 and had a bye in the semifinals.
Ungaro, driving a ’67 Chevelle, had a bye in the quarterfinals and beat Mo Bolduc (Feasterville, Pa.) in the semis.
