Complete results: Glory Days Nostalgia Drags
Maple Grove Raceway’s annual Glory Days Nostalgia Drags meet was a throwback to drag racing’s wild, colorful early days and included nostalgia drag racing, a car show, oldies music and a swap meet. The event enjoyed strong support from a number of nostalgia-style drag racing organizations. The two-day event concluded on Sunday, June 29, with Nostalgia 1 and Nostalgia 2 class eliminations.
On Sunday, Jerry Zedek of Seven Valleys, Pa., drove his 1980 Oldsmobile Starfire to victory in the Nostalgia 1 bracket-racing class over Dale Gerhert of Reinholds, Pa. Gerhert, driving a 1938 Chevrolet sedan, posted a perfect .000 sec. reaction time but lost to Zedek, 9.506 sec./134.31 mph to 9.679 sec./138.22 mph. Rich Pennington of Barto, Pa., drove his 1968 Barracuda to victory over Ken Gerberich of Annville, Pa., for Nostalgia 2 eliminator honors.
On Saturday, George Reidnauer, of Bechtelsville, Pa., drove the Excalibur Nostalgia Funny Car to victory in the final round of eliminations over Jonathan Wall of Weymouth, Mass. Reidnaver outran Wall’s Fireball Monza Nostalgia Funny Car, 6.793 sec./201.04 mph to 7.128 sec./152.55 mph.
The Back Seat Drivers final for nostalgia-style front-engine dragsters was won by John Kennedy of Westgrove, Pa., over Tim Dietz of Hanover, Pa. Kennedy was handed the win on the starting line when his opponent fouled (“red-lit”).
The MANDRA (Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Drag Racing Association) final was won by Art Hand of Salford, Pa., in a 1963 Falcon over Marc English of Milton, Pa.
The East Coast Gassers‘ class finale was taken by John Schreiner of East Northport, N.Y., over John Labuda of Herminie, Pa.
NETO (North East Timing Organization) racers competed in two classes. The NETO Nostalgia class was won by Roger Wright of Blooming Glen, Pa. Gerry Ingersock, of Clifton, N.J., was runner-up in his 1967 Mercury Comet. The NETO Comp class was won by John Giambertone, of Staten Island, N.Y., in a 1965 Mercury Comet over Chris Craft of Mahopac, N.Y.
The 422 All-Stars are a group of nostalgia Super Stock racers and John Warechime, of Parkville, Maryland, topped the 29-car field in the final by outrunning Anthony Pappas.
Two special races were conducted for racers in the Nostalgia 1 and Nostalgia 2 classes. A shootout was held for the top 16 qualifiers in each class. Ted Myce (Chalfont, Pa.) won the Nostalgia 1 shootout over Rob Snyder (Sinking Spring, Pa.). Mike Nessinger (Stevens, Pa.) claimed the Nostalgia 2 shootout by defeating Curt Rubendall (Pottstown, Pa.).
The Geezer class for senior citizens was won by Denny Renninger (Leesport, Pa.) over Shane Resh (Dover Pa.). Renninger turned in a perfect reaction time of .000 sec. en route to victory.
