Maple Grove Raceway hosted the annual Mega MOPAR Action series on Sunday, June 22. The daylong event featured all-MOPAR (Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge, DeSoto) drag racing, a car show, swap meet and manufacturers’ midway.
Gary Wolkwitz of Califon, N.J., raced to a $4,000 payday in the Penske Truck Leasin Hemi Challenge. Wolkwitz, driving a 1968 Dodge Dart, defeated Charlie Westcott Jr. of Parma, Mich., in the final round, 8.527 sec./156.19 mph to 8.518 sec./158.82 mph. Seven cars competed in the first round. Wolkwitz defeated Bucky Hess and Westcott singled. Larry Perkins Sr. defeated Jim Pancake and Jim Daniels won over Tyler Hard. Wolkwitz defeated Daniels, last year’s winner, in the second round and Westcott put Perkins on the trailer.
The S&W Race Cars Challenger Shootout was won by Charles Augustine of Kutztown, Pa., over Earl Barlet.
Street Eliminator honors went to Kurt Myers over Steve Fox.
The Late Model Hemi finale was won by John Kakalecik of Whitehouse Station, N.J. Kakalecik won the race on the starting line when opponent Bob Kaiser of Penndale, Pa., fouled (“red-lit”).
The Non-Electronics class was won by Lisa Bolton of Mechanicsville, Pa., over Barry Donnelly of St. Michael, Pa.
The Electronics class was won by Darlene Staub of Dover, Pa., over Brian Ottaviano.
Next weekend, MGR will present its annual Glory Days Nostalgia Drags — a throwback to drag racing’s wild, colorful early days — includes drag racing, a car show and swap meet. The featured drag racing portion of the nostalgia racing fest will take place on Saturday, June 28, and is headlined by four alcohol-burning Nostalgia Funny Cars. The Nostalgia Funny Cars will be joined by five nostalgia drag racing organizations: East Coast Gassers, the 422 All-Stars (nostalgia Super Stocks), Back Seat Drivers, North East Timing Organization (NETO) and Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Drag Racing Association (MANDRA).
Nostalgia E.T. bracket racing (no cars newer than 1989) will take place on Sunday, June 29, with a special top-16 shootout on Saturday, June 28. The car show will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 28. Judging is scheduled for 2 p.m. with awards at 4 p.m. There is no entry fee to enter the car show, but a pit pass is required. The top 25 judged cars will receive awards.
The weekend of speed kicks off on Friday, June 27, with another edition of Auto Locator Fast Friday heads-up racing and testing. Gates will open at 4 p.m. with racing from 5-10 p.m.
Now in its 52nd year of operation, historic Maple Grove Raceway is recognized as a leading facility in the sport of NHRA-sanctioned drag racing. The NHRA Nationals, MGR’s annual NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series national event, will take place on Oct. 2-5.
