With the cooler conditions at Maple Grove Raceway Friday evening for the Geezers Reunion, it shouldn’t have been a surprise that the Nitro pilots were licking their chops as they climbed into the Funny Cars.

Indeed, the crowd that came to The Grove for night qualifying for the Uni-Select Cavalcade of Funny Cars run in conjunction with the Mickey Thompson DRO AA/FC Challenge were in for a big treat.

In the first round of qualifying, Mike Lewis came back to his home track in the Brand X Mustang and rewrote the record book. His pass of 5.775 seconds at 247.11 broke the previous mark set in 2011 by John Hale. Hale made a pass of 5.852.

Lewis’s MPH of 247.11  just missed the MPH mark of 248.61 set by Chad Head in 2012.

In the same pass, Peter Gallen and his Poverty Stricken Monza went 5.787 at 244.69 that also surpassed the old ET mark.

After the second round of qualifying, Lewis was still on top with Gallen in second. Also getting into Saturday night’s show were Mike Smith (5.815), Marc White (5.886), Jake  Crimmins (5.894), Shawn Bowen (5.922), John Smmith (5.977) and Mike Halstead (6.146).

Gates open for Saturday’s round of the Geezers Reunion at 8 a.m. with bracket qualifying and a car show through the day. The big show, including eight Nitro and eight Alcohol Funny Cars begins at 6 p.m.
